Gauree, Fifth Mehl:
aad maDh jo ant nibaahai. so saajan mayraa man chaahai. ||1||
My mind longs for that Friend, who shall stand by me in the beginning, in the middle and in the end. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

My heart longs for the one Friend who stays with me all the way through — at the start of things, in the middle, and right to the end. Not a fair-weather friend, but one who never lets go.

The friend worth longing for is the one who stays through beginning, middle, and end.
The deeper layer

The heart longs for a friend who stays with you from start to finish.

Aad maDh jo ant nibaahai — the one who stands by me at the beginning, in the middle and at the end. So saajan mayraa man chaahai — that is the Friend my mind longs for. Saajan means a dear, close friend.

This is the question the whole shabad starts from. Of all the loves in life, which one never changes? Some friends are there only when things are fun, like a friend who comes to the party but not to help clean up. The heart wants the one who stays. The answer comes in the next line, the Rahao.

A Question to Sit With

Who is a friend you know would stay with you no matter what?
