The Things You Hold Stay Behind

ਜੋ ਦੀਸੈ ਸੋ ਸੰਗਿ ਨ ਗਇਓ ॥
jo deesai so sang na ga-i-o.
Whatever you see, shall not go with you.
ਸਾਕਤੁ ਮੂੜੁ ਲਗੇ ਪਚਿ ਮੁਇਓ ॥੨॥
saakat moorh lagay pach mu-i-o. ||2||
The foolish, faithless cynics are attached - they waste away and die. ||2||

In plain words

Everything you can see and hold will one day stay behind — none of it travels with you. So a heart that clings only to those things, forgetting the One, quietly wears itself out.

The things you can hold stay behind; a heart that clings only to them wears itself out.
The deeper layer

Nothing we can see or hold comes with us. A heart that clings only to those things wears itself out.

Jo deesai so sang na ga-i-o — whatever you see does not go with you. Think of a video game. You can collect every coin and every prize. When you switch it off, none of them come with you into the room.

Saakat moorh lagay pach mu-i-o — the foolish saakat stays attached and wastes away. A saakat is someone turned away from the Source of life. The point is the cost inside the person. A heart that clings only to passing things, forgetting the One, quietly wears itself out. This is sadness for a heart, not contempt for a person.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you'd hate to lose — but know you can't take with you forever?
