As Craving and Anger Loosen, the Heart Settles

ਕਾਮ ਕ੍ਰੋਧ ਲੋਭੁ ਮੋਹੁ ਤਜੋ ॥
kaam kroDh lobh moh tajo.
Abandon sexual desire, anger, greed and emotional attachment.
ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਦੁਹੁ ਤੇ ਰਹਿਓ ॥੬॥
janam maran duhu tay rahi-o. ||6||
Thus you shall be rid of both birth and death. ||6||

In plain words

Loosen the grip of craving, anger, greed, and clinging attachment. As they ease, so does the endless spinning of coming and going — you settle into something steadier.

As craving, anger, and clinging loosen their grip, a restless heart finally settles.
The deeper layer

As craving, anger, greed and clinging loosen their grip, the restless heart settles.

Kaam krodh lobh moh tajo — let go of kaam, strong desire; krodh, anger; lobh, greed; and moh, clinging attachment. Gurbani usually names five of these troubles. Here four are named.

Janam maran duhu tay rahi-o — you are freed from both birth and death. That freedom can also be felt now, as the endless spinning of coming and going slows down. Think of a spinning top. Stop pushing it, and it slows, and wobbles, and comes to rest.

A Question to Sit With

Which of these — wanting, anger, or holding on too tight — spins you the most?
