Verse 8 of 9

When Wisdom Lights a Lamp, the Darkness Lifts

ਦੂਖੁ ਅੰਧੇਰਾ ਘਰ ਤੇ ਮਿਟਿਓ ॥
dookh anDhayraa ghar tay miti-o.
Pain and darkness shall depart from your home,
ਗੁਰਿ ਗਿਆਨੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜਾਇਓ ਦੀਪ ਬਲਿਓ ॥੭॥
gur gi-aan darirhaa-i-o deep bali-o. ||7||
when the Guru implants spiritual wisdom within you, and lights that lamp. ||7||

In plain words

The ache and the darkness lift right out of your inner home. That happens when the teaching plants wisdom inside you and lights a lamp there. And suddenly you can see.

When wisdom lights a lamp inside you, the ache and the darkness simply lift.
The deeper layer

When the Guru's wisdom lights a lamp inside you, the pain and the darkness leave.

Dookh andhayraa ghar tay miti-o — pain and darkness leave the home. The home here is the inner house, the heart. Gur gi-aan darirhaa-i-o deep bali-o — the Guru plants wisdom deep inside, and a lamp is lit.

Think of walking into a dark room and flipping on the light. The darkness does not argue. It is simply gone. Understanding works like that light. It ends the dark of confusion. The lamp in the house is a picture that comes back in the next Gauree shabad too.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you understood that suddenly made a dark, confusing feeling lift?
