Pride Puffs the Mind Bigger Than It Really Is

ਜੋਬਨਵੰਤ ਅਚਾਰ ਕੁਲੀਨਾ ਮਨ ਮਹਿ ਹੋਇ ਗੁਮਾਨੀ ॥੩॥
jobanvant achaar kuleenaa man meh ho-ay gumaanee. ||3||
"I am young, cultured, and born of a good family." In his mind, he is proud and arrogant like this. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

"I'm young, I'm well-mannered, I come from a good family" — and just like that, pride puffs the mind up bigger than it really is.

Pride quietly puffs the mind up bigger than it really is.
The deeper layer

Pride blows the mind up bigger than it really is.

Jobanvant achaar kuleenaa — I am young, I have good manners, I come from a good family. Man meh ho-ay gumaanee — and so the mind grows proud.

These are the ego's favorite boasts: youth, manners, and family name. They are exactly the things that puff a mind up. Picture a balloon. It looks huge, but it is mostly air.

The verse does not mock these things. It simply shows pride making the self look bigger than it truly is.

A Question to Sit With

What are you tempted to feel proud about — and does it make you bigger or just puffed up?
