The Knots of Me and Mine Don't Loosen on Their Own

ਜਿਉ ਉਲਝਾਇਓ ਬਾਧ ਬੁਧਿ ਕਾ ਮਰਤਿਆ ਨਹੀ ਬਿਸਰਾਨੀ ॥੪॥
ji-o uljhaa-i-o baaDh buDh kaa marti-aa nahee bisraanee. ||4||
He is trapped by his false intellect, and he does not forget this until he dies. ||4||

In plain words

Once the mind ties itself in these knots of "me" and "mine," they hold on tight — the tangle stays right up to the very end.

The knots of 'me' and 'mine' hold on tight — they don't loosen on their own.
The deeper layer

Once the mind is tangled in "me" and "mine," the knot holds tight.

Ji-o uljhaa-i-o baaDh buDh kaa — the mind is caught in a knot of its own wrong thinking. Marti-aa nahee bisraanee — it does not let go, even until death. So the tangle stays right to the very end.

Think of earbuds left in a pocket. Once they knot up, they do not untangle on their own. The ego is like that. Once it grips, it is stubborn.

This sets up where the shabad is heading. Untying this knot will need grace, the One's kindness.

A Question to Sit With

What is a habit of thought that holds on to you even when you'd like to let it go?
