Everything You Gather Gets Handed On

ਭਾਈ ਮੀਤ ਬੰਧਪ ਸਖੇ ਪਾਛੇ ਤਿਨਹੂ ਕਉ ਸੰਪਾਨੀ ॥੫॥
bhaa-ee meet banDhap sakhay paachhay tinhoo ka-o sampaanee. ||5||
Brothers, friends, relatives and companions who live after him - he entrusts his wealth to them. ||5||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

All the friends and family who go on living afterward — that's who everything you gathered gets handed to. It stays behind; it was never really yours to keep.

Everything you gather gets handed on — it was borrowed to enjoy, never yours to keep.
The deeper layer

Everything we gather gets passed on to others one day.

Bhaa-ee meet banDhap sakhay paachhay — brothers, friends, relatives, and companions who live on after us. Tinhoo ka-o sampaanee — it all gets handed to them.

What we gather was borrowed, never owned. It is like a library book. You can love it and enjoy it, but it goes back in the end.

The verse says this calmly, not to scare anyone. It is a simple fact about life. Seeing it clearly makes us feel free, not afraid.

A Question to Sit With

If you can't keep the things you gather, what would you most want to do with them?
