har saachaa so-ee tis bin avar na ko-ee bin sayvi-ai sukh na paa-ay.
The Lord is True; there is no one except Him. Without serving Him, peace is not found.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਾ ਧਨ ਮਿਲੈ ਮਿਲਾਈ ਜਿਸ ਨੋ ਆਪਿ ਮਿਲਾਏ ॥੧॥
naanak saa Dhan milai milaa-ee jis no aap milaa-ay. ||1||
O Nanak, that soul-bride, whom the Lord Himself unites, is united with Him; He Himself merges with her. ||1||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
In plain words
The soul offers up its prayer, holding close all the good and beauty of the One. It cannot rest even for a moment, an instant, apart from the love it was made for. Without the teaching, it can't find the One's home; so whatever the teaching says, it gladly does — and the fever of endless wanting cools right down. The One alone is real; there is no other, and no peace comes without turning toward it. The soul is united the moment the One draws it near.
When you gladly follow good guidance, the fever of always-wanting-more cools down.
The deeper layer
Stanza ||1|| of a Guru Amar Das Chhant. Saa dhan bin-o karay ... har kay gun saaray — the soul prays, treasuring the One's virtues. Tisnaa agan bujhaaee-ai — the "fire of desire" is quenched, rendered gently as the "fever of endless wanting" cooling. Milai milaaee jis no aap milaa-ay — union is entirely grace: the One draws the soul near.
A Question to Sit With
What is a 'wanting more and more' feeling that you'd like to cool down?
