The Deepest Love Comes Home and Never Leaves

mil mayray pareetamaa jee-o tuDh bin kharee nimaanee.
Meet me, O my Dear Beloved. Without You, I am totally dishonored.
mai nainee need na aavai jee-o bhaavai ann na paanee.
Sleep does not come to my eyes, and I have no desire for food or water.
paanee ann na bhaavai maree-ai haavai bin pir ki-o sukh paa-ee-ai.
I have no desire for food or water, and I am dying from the pain of separation. Without my Husband Lord, how can I find peace?
gur aagai kara-o binantee jay gur bhaavai ji-o milai tivai milaa-ee-ai.
I offer my prayers to the Guru; if it pleases the Guru, He shall unite me with Himself.
aapay mayl la-ay sukh-daata aap mili-aa ghar aa-ay.
The Giver of peace has united me with Himself; He Himself has come to my home to meet me.
O Nanak, the soul-bride is forever the Lord's favorite wife; her Husband Lord does not die, and He shall never leave. ||4||2||

In plain words

Come to me, dear One — without You I feel so small. My eyes won't close in sleep, and even food and water lose their taste. Nothing tastes right, and I ache with missing You — how does anyone find peace apart from their love? So I make my prayer to the teaching: if it's right, then however the meeting is meant to happen, let me be brought close. And the Giver of peace did just that — came to my very home to meet me. The soul is forever glad now, for this love does not die and does not leave.

The deepest love is the one that comes home to you and never dies, never leaves.
The deeper layer

The closing stanza (||4||2||). The ache of separation (sleep gone, food tasteless) is voiced honestly, then resolved with tenderness: aapay mayl la-ay sukh-daataa — "the Giver of peace united me," aap mili-aa ghar aa-ay — "came to my home." The final line is pure comfort: naa pir marai na jaa-ay — "the Beloved neither dies nor departs." A love that never leaves — the deepest reassurance, and a fitting close to the raag's chhants.

A Question to Sit With

What would it mean to you to have a love that could never leave?
