Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
The One acts, and moves others to act, and makes each heart beautiful with the word. The One is the true teacher and the teaching itself — and in every age, the ones who love are held close.
Age after age, they are cherished; the One arranges everything for them and draws them into devotion.
The One knows everything and sees everything, and gently invites us into loving service.
The One gives us our good qualities, clears away our faults, and settles the Name inside the heart. Forever I am amazed and grateful to the One who is truly real — who does, and lets be done, all things.
This one says the One is behind everything: the teacher, the teaching, and even the love you feel.
Listen for the word aapay. It means "the One Himself," and it repeats like a heartbeat. Aapay satgur aap sabad — the One is the true Guru, and the One is the word. The One is the doer, the giver of good qualities, the remover of faults.
The big idea is oneness. If there is only one reality, then everything comes from that one source: the teaching, the teacher, even the devotion you feel. Think of every light in a house running on the same power line. Many lamps, one power.
This brings freedom. It does not mean everything is fixed and hopeless. Your good qualities are gifts: the One is gundaataa, the giver of virtues. Your faults can be cleared: avgun kaatay. You never had to build your own worth by yourself.
Naanak sad balihaaree — Nanak is forever given over, full of wonder. This is where the whole chhant, this song in four verses, has been going: toward wonder and gratitude, not fear.
What is one good quality in you that feels less like something you built and more like a gift you were given?
