In plain words

I would give my whole heart, my whole self, everything I have, to the dear friend who brings me word of the One.

When I gave my all to the teacher, right there — with the teacher — the One was shown to me, closer than I imagined.

In a single moment, all the aching was gone, and I received exactly what my heart had been reaching for.

Day and night the soul is joyful now; every worry has melted away. The One I longed for — I have met, just as I hoped.

What you were aching for from far away turns out to have been right beside you all along.
The deeper layer

This is the hinge of the chhant: the longing meets its answer. The extravagant offering — man arpee, tan arpee, sir arpee (I give my mind, my body, my head) — is the language of total devotion, but it lands on a gentle surprise: the One is revealed gur peh sang — "right there with the teacher," and sang prabhoo dikhaa-i-aa, God was shown to be with me all along. The distance of Pauri 0 collapses in an instant (khin maahi saglaa dookh miti-aa). Manhu chindi-aa paa-i-aa — "I received what my mind longed for" — is the fulfillment. The teaching here is quietly profound: the Beloved was never far; the giving of self simply opened the eyes to a nearness that was already there.

A Question to Sit With

Has something you searched everywhere for ever turned out to be closer than you thought?
