Speak the Naam and Let It Settle in You

ਸਲੋਕੁ ॥
salok.
Shalok:
ਹਰਿ ਹਰਿ ਮੁਖ ਤੇ ਬੋਲਨਾ ਮਨਿ ਵੂਠੈ ਸੁਖੁ ਹੋਇ ॥
har har mukh tay bolnaa man voothai sukh ho-ay.
Chanting the Name of the Lord, Har, Har, and keeping it in your mind, you shall find peace.
ਨਾਨਕ ਸਭ ਮਹਿ ਰਵਿ ਰਹਿਆ ਥਾਨ ਥਨੰਤਰਿ ਸੋਇ ॥੧॥
naanak sabh meh rav rahi-aa thaan thanantar so-ay. ||1||
O Nanak, the Lord is pervading everywhere; He is contained in all spaces and interspaces. ||1||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Speak the Naam with your mouth and let it settle into your mind, and peace comes to live in you.

For, Nanak says, the One is spread through everything, everywhere — filling every place and every space in between. There is nowhere it is absent, which means the peace you are reaching for is never far away.

Speak the Naam and let it settle in you — the One fills every space, so peace is never far.
The deeper layer

Speak the Naam and let it dwell in your mind, and peace comes to live in you.

Har har mukh tay bolnaa — speaking the Naam — is a doorway to sukh, peace, far more than repeating words. Man voothai — the Naam coming to dwell in the mind. Sabh meh rav rahi-aa thaan thanantar — pervading every place and space between: the One everywhere means peace is always near, as in the Vaasudayv Shalok earlier in this stretch.

A Question to Sit With

What is a word or thought that, when you hold it, brings a little peace into your day?
