The heart is cooled and soothed, and the mind is at peace, chanting and singing the Glorious Praises of the Lord of the Universe.

Show such Mercy, O God, that Nanak may become the slave of Your slaves. ||1||

In plain words

The heart cools and the mind grows calm and peaceful when it sings the praises of the One who fills the universe.

Show such kindness, One, that Nanak would happily serve even those who serve You — glad to be the smallest, most humble helper of all.

Singing the One’s praises cools an overheated heart — and true peace is found in glad, humble service, wanting to help rather than to be first.
The deeper layer

Humility, and a cool heart. Seetal saant sukh... gaa-ay is the whole Bavan Akhri's promise in miniature: singing the One's praises cools an overheated heart. Then the prayer: daas daasan daas — "make me the servant of Your servants" — glad, willing service, the smallest, most humble helper, as the ego (haumai) empties out. To ask to serve even those who serve is to place oneself last on purpose, and to find peace exactly there. Empty hands held out to grace: I bring nothing but willingness.

A Question to Sit With

When have you felt calmer or happier helping quietly in the background than being out in front?
