Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
They never trouble anyone’s heart, the ones who have let everything else go and hold on to the One alone.
Bumping and clashing, all wrapped up in chasing passing things, a person can feel strangely lifeless inside. They never quite find happiness there.
But the one who lives in the Sangat finds a deep, cool peace. The sweet Name grows delicious to the soul.
That humble person is so dear to the One. Nanak says: their mind becomes cool and soothed, settled and calm, like shade after a long walk in the sun.
Those who hold the One never trouble anyone's heart, and in the Sangat their own mind is cooled and soothed.
This is the verse for the letter T'hat'ha. It opens with a striking rule for living. Manoo-aa thaaheh naahee — they do not trouble anyone's mind. Who? Jo sagal ti-aag aykeh laptaahee — those who let go of everything else and hold on to the One alone. Being gentle with other people's hearts comes first. It grows naturally out of letting go.
Thahak thahak maa-i-aa sang moo-ay — those who are all wrapped up in maa-i-aa, chasing passing things, are like the dead. It means feeling lifeless inside, cut off from real happiness. It is not a curse of death.
The mark of this verse is coolness. Thaadh paree — a great, cool peace settles. Man seetlaa-i-aa — the mind is cooled and soothed. The same cooling picture comes back in other letters nearby. Think of stepping into shade after a long walk in the hot sun. That is the relief of an overheated mind finally settling, in the Sangat where the Name has grown sweet.
Can you think of a person whose calm makes the people around them calmer too? What is that like?
