When the Wanting Stills, a Truer Delight Moves In

Shalok:
ਮਾਇਆ ਡੋਲੈ ਬਹੁ ਬਿਧੀ ਮਨੁ ਲਪਟਿਓ ਤਿਹ ਸੰਗ ॥
maa-i-aa dolai baho biDhee man lapti-o tih sang.
Maya clings to the mind, and causes it to waver in so many ways.

maagan tay jih tum rakhahu so naanak naameh rang. ||1||
When You, O Lord, restrain someone from asking for wealth, then, O Nanak, he comes to love the Name. ||1||

In plain words

The world's shimmer tugs at the mind, pulling it this way and that, and it's easy to get wrapped up chasing it.

But Nanak says: when the endless wanting to grab more is quietly stilled in you, something better takes its place — you come to love the Naam itself. When the grasping eases, a truer delight moves in.

When the endless wanting-more is quietly stilled, a truer delight moves in — love for the Naam itself.
The deeper layer

When the One stills your wanting, love for the Naam moves in.

Maa-i-aa dolai... man lapti-o — Maya makes the mind waver and it gets wrapped up. The tender turn: maagan tay jih tum rakhahu — when the One holds you back from asking for more — so naameh rang, that one comes to love the Naam. The stilling of craving is itself a gift of grace: the One holds you back. The "Mamma" Pauri follows, on what is worth asking for.

A Question to Sit With

When the wanting for one more thing finally quiets down, what better feeling sometimes takes its place?
