Ego Is an Illness to Heal, Not a Crime to Punish

ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੪ ॥
salok mehlaa 4.
Shalok, Fourth Mehl:
ਮਨ ਅੰਤਰਿ ਹਉਮੈ ਰੋਗੁ ਹੈ ਭ੍ਰਮਿ ਭੂਲੇ ਮਨਮੁਖ ਦੁਰਜਨਾ ॥
man antar ha-umai rog hai bharam bhoolay manmukh durjanaa.
Deep within the mind is the disease of ego; the self-willed manmukhs, the evil beings, are deluded by doubt.
ਨਾਨਕ ਰੋਗੁ ਗਵਾਇ ਮਿਲਿ ਸਤਿਗੁਰ ਸਾਧੂ ਸਜਨਾ ॥੧॥
naanak rog gavaa-ay mil satgur saaDhoo sajnaa. ||1||
O Nanak, this disease is eradicated, only when one meets the True Guru, our Holy Friend. ||1||

In plain words

Deep inside the mind there can be an illness — ego, the feeling of being a separate, walled-off self, which can leave a person confused and lost.

Nanak says: that illness heals when you meet the True Guru, the holy friend who helps you see clearly again.

Ego is an illness to be healed, not a crime to be punished — and it heals through the friendship of the True Guru.
The deeper layer

Haumai rog hai — "ego is a disease." Ego is a condition to be healed, the way you would treat any illness — with care, not blame. The manmukh durjanaa ("self-turned, difficult ones") are bharam bhoolay — "wandering, lost in confusion" — a state of being lost, not evil. And the cure is warm and relational: mil satgur saadhoo sajnaa — you meet the True Guru as a sajan, a "dear friend." Healing comes through the friendship of someone who helps you find the path again, never as a solitary battle against yourself.

A Question to Sit With

When you feel lost or stuck, who is a "wise friend" you could turn to?
