Meeting the One Is a Light Switching On Inside

ਮਃ ੪ ॥
mehlaa 4.
Fourth Mehl:
ਵਡਭਾਗੀਆ ਸੋਹਾਗਣੀ ਜਿਨਾ ਗੁਰਮੁਖਿ ਮਿਲਿਆ ਹਰਿ ਰਾਇ ॥
vadbhaagee-aa sohaaganee jinaa gurmukh mili-aa har raa-ay.
Very fortunate is the soul-bride, who, as Gurmukh, meets the Lord, her King.
ਅੰਤਰ ਜੋਤਿ ਪ੍ਰਗਾਸੀਆ ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਮਿ ਸਮਾਇ ॥੨॥
antar jot pargaasee-aa naanak naam samaa-ay. ||2||
Her inner being is illiminated with His Divine Light; O Nanak, she is absorbed in His Name. ||2||

In plain words

How fortunate is the soul who, through the Guru, meets the One, its King.

A light kindles within, and Nanak says: it melts into the Name.

Meeting the One is a light switching on inside, right here, and the soul melting quietly into it.
The deeper layer

A tiny two-line Shalok of the Fourth Mehl, and a jewel. It uses the old image of the sohaagan — the fortunate soul-bride united with her Beloved — a metaphor Gurbani uses for every soul, regardless of gender, meeting the One. Everything turns on antar jot pargaasee-aa — "an inner light is kindled." Union with the One is a light switching on inside, close at hand: something that was always there in the dark, suddenly shining. And then naam samaa-ay — the soul "melts into the Name," the way a drop merges into water. Brief as it is, it holds the whole path — meeting, light, and merging — in a single breath.

A Question to Sit With

What do you imagine it feels like when a light "turns on" inside a person — a moment of suddenly understanding something?
