ਮਃ ੫ ॥

Fifth Mehl:
ਸਿਖਹੁ ਸਬਦੁ ਪਿਆਰਿਹੋ ਜਨਮ ਮਰਨ ਕੀ ਟੇਕ ॥
sikhahu sabad pi-aariho janam maran kee tayk.
O Sikhs, love the Word of the Shabad; in life and death, it is our only support.

mukh oojal sadaa sukhee naanak simrat ayk. ||2||
Your face shall be radiant, and you shall find a lasting peace, O Nanak, remembering the One Lord in meditation. ||2||

In plain words

Learn to love the Word — let it be your support through the whole of life, from beginning to end.

Nanak says: your face will shine and a steady peace will stay with you, keeping the One in mind.

A shining face is a settled heart showing through.
The deeper layer

Addressed directly to Sikhs — "learners" — here is a warm instruction rather than a command: sikhahu sabad pi-aariho, "learn to love the Word." The sabad is offered as tayk, a support, the thing you can lean on across janam maran — through the entire span of a life. The image mukh oojal — "the radiant face" — is Gurbani's picture of a person at peace: not made-up beauty, but the natural glow of someone who isn't carrying hidden shame or fear. And it comes from something simple and repeatable: simrat ayk, keeping the One in mind. A shining face, in this reading, is just a settled heart showing through.

A Question to Sit With

Have you noticed how people look when they're at peace versus stressed? What do you think shows through?
