The bitter tug of harmful things is spread all through the world, and it clings and pulls at everyone.
Yet Nanak says: those who look closely come to see it clearly: the Name of the One is what is sweet.
An honest picture of how the world feels: bikhai ka-urh-tan sagal maahi — a "bitterness" (the pull of bikh, the harmful and corrosive) that is sagal maahi, everywhere, and laptaa-ay, clinging. Temptation and difficulty are real and widespread. Against all of it stands one clear discovery: veechaari-aa, having "reflected, examined, thought it through," a person finds meethaa har kaa naa-o — the Name of the One is sweet. The discovery comes through veechaar, careful looking, more than blind hope. Taste the difference, and the choice becomes obvious.
