Lose Your Center and You Lose Your Compass

ਸਲੋਕ ਮਃ ੫ ॥
salok mehlaa 5.
Shalok, Fifth Mehl:
ਕਾਮੁ ਨ ਕਰਹੀ ਆਪਣਾ ਫਿਰਹਿ ਅਵਤਾ ਲੋਇ ॥
kaam na karhee aapnaa fireh avtaa lo-ay.
People do not perform their duties, but instead, they wander around aimlessly.
ਨਾਨਕ ਨਾਇ ਵਿਸਾਰਿਐ ਸੁਖੁ ਕਿਨੇਹਾ ਹੋਇ ॥੧॥
naanak naa-ay visaari-ai sukh kinayhaa ho-ay. ||1||
O Nanak, if they forget the Name, how can they ever find peace? ||1||

In plain words

A person can drift along without doing what is theirs to do, wandering with no direction.

Nanak says: with the Name set aside, where would a settled peace even come from?

When you lose your center you lose your compass — and the days start to wander.
The deeper layer

Two things go together: purposeless drifting and forgetting the source. Kaam na karhee aapnaa — "not doing one's own work" — and fireh avtaa lo-ay, wandering the world aimlessly. Then comes an honest question, the way a caring friend might ask it: sukh kinayhaa ho-ay — "what kind of peace could there be?" if the Name is set aside. The two are linked: when you lose your center, you also lose your compass, and the days start to wander. The cure is simply picking the compass back up — remembering what orients you.

A Question to Sit With

What is something that is "yours to do" right now? And what helps you feel pointed in a direction rather than just drifting?
