Sikhism·Raag Gauree·Shabad 297
Verse 3 of 5

One Restlessness Touches All; One Presence Cools All

ਜਿਹ ਪਾਵਕ ਸੁਰਿ ਨਰ ਹੈ ਜਾਰੇ ॥
jih paavak sur nar hai jaaray.
That fire has consumed angels and mortal beings,
ਰਾਮ ਉਦਕਿ ਜਨ ਜਲਤ ਉਬਾਰੇ ॥੨॥
raam udak jan jalat ubaaray. ||2||
but the Water of the Lord's Name saves His humble servants from burning. ||2||

In plain words

The fire of restless craving is powerful — even great and wise beings have felt its heat. But the Water of the One's presence protects the one who drinks it. No fire is stronger than that living coolness.

The same restlessness touches everyone, great or small — and the same living presence can cool anyone who turns to it.
The deeper layer

Everyone feels the fire of craving, and the same Water cools everyone.

Jih paavak sur nar hai jaaray — that paavak, fire, has burned sur nar, angels and humans alike. The fire here is craving and feeling separate. No one is naturally safe from it. The pull is felt by all.

Raam udak jan jalat ubaaray — the Water of the One saves jan, the humble one, from burning. So the verse quietly makes everyone equal. Great beings and ordinary people face the same fire inside, and the same Water cools them all. Think of a hot summer day at the pool. The coach and the kids all jump into the same cool water. This is an early hint of Kabir's deep sense of equality.
