You Live Inside Your Source Like a Fish in the Sea

ਤੂੰ ਜਲਨਿਧਿ ਹਉ ਜਲ ਕਾ ਮੀਨੁ ॥

You are the Ocean of Water, and I am just a fish in that Water.

In that Water, I remain; without that Water, I would perish. ||1||

In plain words

You are the whole ocean, and I am a small fish swimming in You. In You I live and breathe; away from You I could not last a moment. You are not something I visit — You are the water I am made to live in.

You are not separate from the source of your life — you live inside it, like a fish in the sea.
The deeper layer

Toon jalnidh, ha-o jal kaa meen — "You are the ocean of water, I am a fish of that water." The image says the seeker is not separate from the divine any more than a fish is separate from the sea (readers may connect this with the wave-and-ocean picture of haumai, an interpretive link rather than the shabad's own wording). The point is total dependence held as total belonging: the fish does not fear the ocean, it lives by it.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you depend on so completely that you barely notice it, the way a fish barely notices water?
