Step Out of the Game of Impressing People

ਹਮ ਮੰਦੇ ਮੰਦੇ ਮਨ ਮਾਹੀ ॥
ham manday manday man maahee.
I am bad, and bad in my mind as well.
ਸਾਝ ਪਾਤਿ ਕਾਹੂ ਸਿਉ ਨਾਹੀ ॥੨॥
saajh paat kaahoo si-o naahee. ||2||
I have no partnership with anyone. ||2||

In plain words

By the world's scoring, I might count as "bad" — an outsider who doesn't play the usual games of rank and reputation. I keep no partnerships built on impressing people. I have stepped out of that whole trade.

You can step out of the game of impressing people and lose nothing that was truly yours.
The deeper layer

Ham manday manday man maahee uses the world's own labels back on itself: yes, by your measure I'm "low." Saajh paat kaahoo si-o naahee — "I have no partnership with anyone" — means Kabir refuses the transactions of status-seeking, where people ally to lift each other's reputations. His independence is not loneliness but freedom from a rigged game. We keep the wry tone and avoid any real self-condemnation.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever felt free after deciding you didn't need to impress a certain group of people?
