The Gurmukhs are awake, contemplating spiritual wisdom and the Glory of God.

Those humble beings who love the Naam, are awake and aware. ||1||

In plain words

Those living for the ego are asleep, in love with the world's glitter. Those turned toward the teaching are wide awake, holding wisdom and the One's glory in mind. The humble who love the Name are awake and aware.

Living for ego is sleep; loving the Name is being awake.
The deeper layer

The sleep-and-awake axis (cf. earlier shabads): the self-facing person asleep in Maya, the Gurmukh awake in wisdom. Wakefulness is defined by love of the Name.

A Question to Sit With

What does it mean to be "awake" inside, not just out of bed?
