Sikhism·Raag Gauree·Shabad 30
Verse 5 of 5

Even in a Dark Age, the Name Frees

is kalijug meh karam Dharam na ko-ee.
In this Dark Age of Kali Yuga, no one is interested in good karma, or Dharmic faith.
kalee kaa janam chandaal kai ghar ho-ee.
This Dark Age was born in the house of evil.
naanak naam binaa ko mukat na ho-ee. ||4||10||30||
O Nanak, without the Naam, the Name of the Lord, no one is liberated. ||4||10||30||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

In this dark age, few care about doing good or living rightly. It is an age born out of trouble. And without the Name, no one is set free.

Even in a dark age -- maybe especially then -- the Name is the one road to freedom.
The deeper layer

The bleak diagnosis of the dark age -- indifferent to good karma and righteousness. Amar Das is not despairing but underscoring the stakes: precisely because the age is dark, the Name is the only liberation. The darker the time, the more vital remembrance.

A Question to Sit With

When the world around you feels careless about goodness, what keeps you anchored?
