If Some Were Higher, They'd Have Arrived Differently

ਜੌ ਤੂੰ ਬ੍ਰਾਹਮਣੁ ਬ੍ਰਹਮਣੀ ਜਾਇਆ ॥
jou tooN baraahman barahmanee jaa-i-aa.
If you are indeed a Brahmin, born of a Brahmin mother,
ਤਉ ਆਨ ਬਾਟ ਕਾਹੇ ਨਹੀ ਆਇਆ ॥੨॥
ta-o aan baat kaahay nahee aa-i-aa. ||2||
then why didn't you come by some other way? ||2||

In plain words

If some people were truly a different, higher kind of human, then they would have entered the world by some special, different path. But they didn't. Everyone arrives the same way. That alone shows we are all one kind.

If some people were truly a higher kind, they'd have arrived differently — but everyone comes the same way.
The deeper layer

If some people were truly a higher kind, they would have come into the world in a different way. But everyone arrives the same way.

Kabir pushes his point further. Jou toon braahman braahmanee jaa-i-aa — if you are a Brahmin, born of a Brahmin mother, ta-o aan baat kaahay nahee aa-i-aa — then why did you not come by some other way?

Every human being is born the same way. Kabir uses that plain fact as proof that we all share one humanity.

Think of a class photo. You could dress some children in crowns and others in plain shirts. Underneath, they are all the same kind of child. The crown does not change who is wearing it.

A Question to Sit With

What is something every single person has in common, no matter what group they belong to?
