Without the One, the Heart Keeps Circling the Ache

ਜਉ ਪੈ ਰਸਨਾ ਰਾਮੁ ਨ ਕਹਿਬੋ ॥
ja-o pai rasnaa raam na kahibo.
As long as the tongue does not chant the Lord's Name,

upjat binsat rovat rahibo. ||1|| rahaa-o.
the person continues coming and going in reincarnation, crying out in pain. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

As long as the tongue does not speak the One's Name, a person keeps circling the same ache.

They keep arriving, leaving, and arriving again, never quite at home.

Without turning toward the One, the heart keeps circling the same ache; remembrance is what lets it settle.
The deeper layer

Without turning toward the One, the heart keeps going round and round the same ache.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line at the center of the shabad. Ja-o pai rasnaa raam na kahibo — as long as the tongue does not speak the Name.

Then the person stays in upjat binsat. It means coming and going, being born and passing away, again and again.

You can feel this as restlessness, the feeling of never being at home. Think of a car driving around and around a block, never finding a place to park. Remembering the One is what lets the heart finally pull in and rest.

A Question to Sit With

When you feel like you keep repeating the same restless pattern, what helps you finally settle down?
