Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Those who cut themselves off from the living Source grow spiritually thirsty, while those who stay connected to it stay truly alive.
Their hearts drink in the sweetness of the One.
People who cut themselves off from the Source grow thirsty inside. People who stay connected drink deeply and stay alive.
The verse sets two kinds of people side by side. A saakat is someone who has turned away from the One. A sant is someone connected to the One. Saakat mareh sant sabh jeeveh — the saakat die, and the sant all live. This describes a condition, a kind of inner thirst, and it holds out an invitation. It is not scorn for any group of people. What matters is not who is "in" or "out." It is whether you stay connected to what nourishes you.
Raam rasaa-in rasnaa peeveh — they drink the sweet nectar of the One with their tongues. Think of a plant. Keep it near water and it stays green. The door to that water stays open to anyone.
What are the things that keep your heart feeling alive and connected, rather than empty?
