When Striving Wears You Out, Open Your Hands

Says Kabir, O God, have mercy on me.

I am so tired; now, please bless me with Your perfection. ||4||13||

In plain words

And so, simply: O One, please be kind to me. I've grown tired of striving on my own. I lay my effort down and open my hands — fill me now with Your completeness.

When striving on your own wears you out, you can set it down and open your hands to receive.
The deeper layer

When you are tired of trying on your own, you can open your hands and ask for grace.

The shabad ends with a simple prayer. Kaho kabeer parabh kirpaa keejai — says Kabir, O God, be kind to me. Haar paray ab pooraa deejai — I am worn out; now give me Your fullness. Haar paray means worn out, even beaten. Here it carries no shame. The striving is set down in trust.

Think of a child who has tried and tried to open a jar, and then hands it to a parent. The hands open to receive what cannot be earned.

A Question to Sit With

When have you finally stopped struggling with something and simply asked for help — and how did that feel?
