Verse 4 of 4

When the Separate Self Dissolves, Fear Ends

ਅਬ ਮਨੁ ਉਲਟਿ ਸਨਾਤਨੁ ਹੂਆ ॥
ab man ulat sanaatan hoo-aa.
My mind has now been restored to its original purity.
ਤਬ ਜਾਨਿਆ ਜਬ ਜੀਵਤ ਮੂਆ ॥
tab jaani-aa jab jeevat moo-aa.
When I became dead while yet alive, only then did I come to know the Lord.
ਕਹੁ ਕਬੀਰ ਸੁਖਿ ਸਹਜਿ ਸਮਾਵਉ ॥
kaho kabeer sukh sahj samaava-o.
Says Kabir, I am now immersed in intuitive peace and poise.
ਆਪਿ ਨ ਡਰਉ ਨ ਅਵਰ ਡਰਾਵਉ ॥੩॥੧੭॥
aap na dara-o na avar daraava-o. ||3||17||
I do not fear anyone, and I do not strike fear into anyone else. ||3||17||

In plain words

My mind has come home to its first, clear self. I understood it the day I became free of my small, separate self while fully alive. Now I rest in a natural peace — and I am not afraid of anyone, and I frighten no one.

When the small separate self dissolves, what remains fears no one and frightens no one.
The deeper layer

The peak: jeevat mooaa — "dead while alive," a beloved Gurbani phrase for the ego dissolving while one still lives fully. We render it as becoming free of the small separate self (haumai), not literal death. The closing line is Kabir's fearless ideal: aap na darau na avar daraavau — I fear no one and frighten no one — safety and gentleness together.

A Question to Sit With

What would it feel like to move through the world without fear — and without making anyone else afraid?
