Live as Evenly as the Elements

Water, fire, wind, earth and ether

Go to that home, which you shall never have to leave. ||4||18||

In plain words

Water, fire, wind, earth, sky — live as gently and evenly as these simple elements, and you stay close to the One. Meditate on the pure, spotless Oneness, says Kabir, and go home to the place you never have to leave.

Live as evenly and freely as the elements, and you are already close to the One.
The deeper layer

This one says: live as evenly as the elements, and you stay close to the One.

Ap tayj baa-ay parithmee aakaasaa — water, fire, wind, earth, and sky. These elements show a simple, fair way to live. The sun shines on everyone. Water flows to everyone. Aisee rahat raha-o har paasaa — live that way, and you stay near the One.

Kahai kabeer niranjan Dhi-aava-o — Kabir says, meditate on Niranjan. Niranjan means the pure One, without a single stain.

Tit ghar jaa-o je bahur na aava-o — go to that home you never have to leave. That home is the soul's final rest in the One. So the inward practice of the whole shabad ends in a plain, fair, simple way of living.

A Question to Sit With

Which of the elements — water, fire, wind, earth, sky — teaches you something about how to live?
