Verse 2 of 4

Only the Touched Know the Sweet Ache of Love

ਲਾਗੀ ਹੋਇ ਸੁ ਜਾਨੈ ਪੀਰ ॥
laagee ho-ay so jaanai peer.
He alone knows it, who feels the pain of such love;
ਰਾਮ ਭਗਤਿ ਅਨੀਆਲੇ ਤੀਰ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
raam bhagat anee-aalay teer. ||1|| rahaa-o.
the arrows of the Lord's devotional worship are so sharp! ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Only the one who carries this ache truly knows what it is. The arrows of loving the One are that sharp — they go straight to the deepest part of you.

Only the one it has touched knows the sweet ache of real love.
The deeper layer

Only someone who has been touched by this love knows its sweet ache.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Laagee ho-ay so jaanai peer — only the one it has struck knows the ache. Peer means pain, an ache. Raam bhagat anee-aalay teer — the arrows of loving devotion to the One are sharp.

This is an old picture: love as an arrow that goes straight to the heart. It is sweet and overwhelming, not violent. You can't really explain it to someone who has never felt it. It is like describing the first bite of a mango to someone who has never tasted one. This is how strong love feels. It is not an injury.

A Question to Sit With

What is something you can only understand once you have felt it yourself?
