Verse 3 of 4

What You Hold as Real Is Where Your Life Moves

ਸਾਹਨਿ ਸਤੁ ਕਰੈ ਜੀਅ ਅਪਨੈ ॥
saahan sat karai jee-a apnai.
One who, in his own soul, believes the Queen Maya to be true,
ਸੋ ਰਮਯੇ ਕਉ ਮਿਲੈ ਨ ਸੁਪਨੈ ॥੨॥
so ramyay ka-o milai na supnai. ||2||
does not meet the Lord, even in dreams. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Someone may, deep down, treat passing riches as the truest thing. That person will not meet the Beloved — not even in a dream.

What you hold as most real is what your life quietly moves toward.
The deeper layer

What you treat as most real is where your life ends up going.

Saahan sat karai jee-a apnai — someone who, deep inside, treats the "queen" as true. Here saahan, the queen, means maya: passing riches, the shiny things that come and go. Such a person milai na supnai — does not meet the One, not even in a dream.

Gurbani often sets sach, what is real and lasting, against jhooth, what is false and passing. Treat the passing thing as the truest thing, and you miss the One. Think of a phone game where you spend hours building a city. It feels so real while you play. Whatever we hold as most real is what we end up living toward.

A Question to Sit With

What do you treat as most real — and where is it leading you?
