True Devotion Is Giving Your Whole Self in Love

ਤਨੁ ਮਨੁ ਧਨੁ ਗ੍ਰਿਹੁ ਸਉਪਿ ਸਰੀਰੁ ॥
tan man Dhan garihu sa-up sareer.
One who surrenders her body, mind, wealth, home and self
ਸੋਈ ਸੁਹਾਗਨਿ ਕਹੈ ਕਬੀਰੁ ॥੩॥੨੩॥
so-ee suhaagan kahai kabeer. ||3||23||
- she is the true soul-bride, says Kabir. ||3||23||

In plain words

Someone may offer everything freely to the Beloved: body, mind, all they have, their home, their whole self.

That one, says Kabir, is the true soul-bride — a soul truly united in love.

True devotion is giving your whole self, freely, in love — not any outward gesture.
The deeper layer

True devotion means giving your whole self in love.

This is Kabir's closing line. He gives a new meaning to suhaagan, the happy, faithful bride. It has nothing to do with an outward act. Tan man Dhan garihu sa-up sareer — she offers her body, mind, wealth, home and whole self. So-ee suhaagan kahai kabeer — she is the true bride, says Kabir.

So Kabir swaps the dramatic outward gesture for the real thing: loving, total self-giving. Think of a kid who helps with a family project with their whole heart, not just showing up for the photo. This is where the whole shabad was heading.

A Question to Sit With

What does it look like to give something your whole heart, and not just part of it?
