Easy to Drift When Everyone Around You Drifts

ਗਉੜੀ ਕਬੀਰ ਜੀ ॥
ga-orhee kabeer jee.
Gauree, Kabir Jee:
ਬਿਖਿਆ ਬਿਆਪਿਆ ਸਗਲ ਸੰਸਾਰੁ ॥
bikhi-aa bi-aapi-aa sagal sansaar.
The whole world is engrossed in corruption.
ਬਿਖਿਆ ਲੈ ਡੂਬੀ ਪਰਵਾਰੁ ॥੧॥
bikhi-aa lai doobee parvaar. ||1||
This corruption has drowned entire families. ||1||

In plain words

So much of the world gets tangled up in what pulls it off course. Whole families are swept along together.

It is easy to drift off course when everyone around you is drifting too.
The deeper layer

When everyone around us drifts, it is easy to drift too.

Bikhi-aa bi-aapi-aa sagal sansaar — the whole world is caught in bikhi-aa. The word means poison. Here it means whatever pulls us off course and away from the One. Bikhi-aa lai doobee parvaar — it has pulled whole families under.

Think of friends swimming in a river. No one notices the current, and together they drift far downstream. Kabir describes the drift. He is not condemning people. And this picture sets up the rescue that comes next.

A Question to Sit With

When has it been hard to do the right thing because everyone around you was going a different way?
