The Cool Water Is Near; We Forget to Drink

ਸੁਰਿ ਨਰ ਦਾਧੇ ਲਾਗੀ ਆਗਿ ॥
sur nar daaDhay laagee aag.
Angels and human beings alike are burning in the raging fire.

nikat neer pas peevas na jhaag. ||2||
The water is near at hand, but the beast does not drink it in. ||2||

In plain words

All around, people are caught in a restless burning — a thirst that never quite settles. And the cool water is right there, close by — yet somehow, like a creature that will not drink, we do not reach for it.

The cool water is always near — the wonder is that we so often forget to drink.
The deeper layer

Relief is right beside us, and we forget to reach for it.

Sur nar daaDhay laagee aag — angels and people alike are burning in a fire. Sur are angels. Nar are human beings. The fire is not flames. It is a restless burning inside, a thirst that never settles. It is the ache of the ego, the me-first feeling.

Nikat neer pas peevas na jhaag — the water is close by, but the animal does not drink. Nikat neer means water nearby. Imagine being very thirsty on a hot day, with a cold bottle of water in your own backpack. The surprise is how near the relief is, if only we would drink.

A Question to Sit With

What relief is closer than you think, if you would just reach for it?
