Gauree, Kabir Jee:
ਜੋ ਜਨ ਲੇਹਿ ਖਸਮ ਕਾ ਨਾਉ ॥ ਤਿਨ ਕੈ ਸਦ ਬਲਿਹਾਰੈ ਜਾਉ ॥੧॥
jo jan layhi khasam kaa naa-o. tin kai sad balihaarai jaa-o. ||1||
I am forever a sacrifice to those humble beings who take the Name of their Lord and Master. ||1||
Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
To everyone who lovingly takes the Beloved's Name, I would give myself again and again in gratitude. Those simple, humble hearts are the ones I honor most.
The people most worth honoring are the humble hearts who love the One.
Kabir opens with balihaarai — "I am a sacrifice to" — a phrase of deep gratitude and honor. Notice who he honors: not the powerful or the high-born, but jan, humble people, whose only distinction is that they love the Name. This sets up the whole shabad's leveling of worth.
A Question to Sit With
Who are the quiet, humble people in your life who deserve more honor than they get?
