Verse 4 of 4

Once You Know the One, the Fear of Endings Lets Go

ਕਹੁ ਕਬੀਰ ਹਰਿ ਚਰਣ ਦਿਖਾਵਹੁ ॥
kaho kabeer har charan dikhaavhu.
Says Kabir, O Lord, please reveal to me Your Lotus Feet;
ਪਾਛੈ ਤੇ ਜਮੁ ਕਿਉ ਨ ਪਠਾਵਹੁ ॥੩॥੩੨॥
paachhai tay jam ki-o na pathaavhu. ||3||32||
after that, go ahead and send me to my death. ||3||32||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Says Kabir: Beloved, just let me see Your feet — let me truly know You.

Once I have that, I am ready and unafraid, whenever my time comes.

Once you truly know the One, the fear of endings quietly lets go.
The deeper layer

This one ends the shabad in peace.

Kaho kabeer har charan dikhaavhu — says Kabir, show me Your feet, O Lord. Seeing the feet is a picture of coming close and truly knowing the One.

Paachhai tay jam ki-o na pathaavhu — after that, go ahead and send death. Jam is the messenger of death. Once Kabir knows the One, the fear of the end lets go.

Think of a dark hallway that feels scary until someone switches on the light. Nothing moved, but the fear is gone. The fear that opened the shabad is not answered by escaping death. It is answered by finding what never dies.

A Question to Sit With

What is something that stops feeling scary once you understand it?
