Sikhism·Raag Gauree·Shabad 33
Verse 4 of 5

When Ego Quiets, an Unstruck Music Begins

ਸਤਿਗੁਰੁ ਸੇਵਹਿ ਸਦਾ ਮਨਿ ਦਾਸਾ ॥
satgur sayveh sadaa man daasaa.
Serving the True Guru, the mind becomes humble forever.
ਹਉਮੈ ਮਾਰਿ ਕਮਲੁ ਪਰਗਾਸਾ ॥
ha-umai maar kamal pargaasaa.
Egotism is subdued, and the heart-lotus blossoms forth.
ਅਨਹਦੁ ਵਾਜੈ ਨਿਜ ਘਰਿ ਵਾਸਾ ॥
anhad vaajai nij ghar vaasaa.
The Unstruck Melody vibrates, as they dwell within the home of the self.
ਨਾਮਿ ਰਤੇ ਘਰ ਮਾਹਿ ਉਦਾਸਾ ॥੩॥
naam ratay ghar maahi udaasaa. ||3||
Attuned to the Naam, they remain detached within their own home. ||3||

In plain words

Serving the true teacher, the mind grows humble for good. The ego quiets, and the heart-flower opens. A music with no instrument begins to sound, deep in the home of the self -- and tuned to the Name, you stay unattached right inside your own home.

When the ego quiets, an unstruck music begins -- and you can be free right inside your own home.
The deeper layer

A jewel of a verse. Service yields lasting humility, the subduing of ego, and the blossoming heart-lotus. Then the Anhad Shabad -- the Unstruck Melody -- vibrates within the home of the self. And the close is pure grihast: detached within your own home -- liberation in the midst of ordinary life.

A Question to Sit With

Have you ever heard a deep quiet "underneath" the noise? When?
