Sikhism·Raag Gauree·Shabad 331
Verse 2 of 3

Instead of Pride in the Passing, Hold What Lasts

ਇਸੁ ਤਨ ਧਨ ਕੋ ਕਿਆ ਗਰਬਈਆ ॥
is tan Dhan ko ki-aa garab-ee-aa.
What pride should we take in this body and wealth?
ਰਾਮ ਨਾਮੁ ਕਾਹੇ ਨ ਦ੍ਰਿੜ੍ਹ੍ਹੀਆ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
raam naam kaahay na darirh-ee-aa. ||1|| rahaa-o.
Why not hold tight to the Lord's Name instead? ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

So why puff ourselves up over this body and our stuff?

Why not hold tight, instead, to the Beloved's Name?

Instead of pride in passing things, hold tight to what lasts.
The deeper layer

The Rahao turns the image into an invitation. Since body and wealth are passing, why build pride on them? Better to grip the one thing that lasts — the Name. Notice the positive framing: not "stop being proud" so much as "hold onto what's actually worth holding."

A Question to Sit With

What is worth holding onto tightly, even when everything else changes?
