There Is a Deeper Joy Beyond the Passing Kind

ਇਸੁ ਸੁਖ ਤੇ ਸਿਵ ਬ੍ਰਹਮ ਡਰਾਨਾ ॥
is sukh tay siv barahm daraanaa.
Even Shiva and Brahma are afraid of this pleasure,
ਸੋ ਸੁਖੁ ਹਮਹੁ ਸਾਚੁ ਕਰਿ ਜਾਨਾ ॥੨॥
so sukh hamhu saach kar jaanaa. ||2||
but I have judged that pleasure to be true. ||2||

In plain words

There is a deeper happiness. Even the great powers of the heavens hold it in awe.

That is the one I've come to know as real and true.

There is a deeper joy, beyond the passing kind, that is truly real.
The deeper layer

Kabir points past the quick kind of pleasure to a deeper joy, and he calls that joy true.

Is sukh tay siv barahm daraanaa — even Shiva and Brahma, great gods in the Hindu stories, are in awe of this joy. It is so vast that even the mightiest stand before it with wonder. So sukh hamhu saach kar jaanaa — that joy I have come to know as saach, true and lasting.

So there are two kinds of happiness. One is the passing pleasure-chase. The other is the joy of resting in the One. Think of a sticker on a T-shirt, and a color dyed right into the cloth. The sticker peels off in the wash. The dye stays.

A Question to Sit With

What kind of happiness stays with you long after the fun moment is over?
