Even the Wisest Found the Mind a Deep Mystery

ਸਨਕਾਦਿਕ ਨਾਰਦ ਮੁਨਿ ਸੇਖਾ ॥
sankaadik naarad mun saykhaa.
Even sages like Sanak and Naarad, and the thousand-headed serpent,
ਤਿਨ ਭੀ ਤਨ ਮਹਿ ਮਨੁ ਨਹੀ ਪੇਖਾ ॥੩॥
tin bhee tan meh man nahee paykhaa. ||3||
did not see the mind within the body. ||3||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Even great sages and seekers of old, deep in their searching,

could not quite catch sight of the mind hidden inside the body.

Even the wisest searchers found the mind a deep mystery.
The deeper layer

Kabir says even the wisest sages of old could not find the mind inside the body.

Sankaadik naarad mun saykhaa — sages like Sanak and Naarad, and Saykh, the thousand-headed serpent of the old stories. They were the most honored searchers of long ago. Tin bhee tan meh man nahee paykhaa — even they did not see the mind within the body.

Kabir is not mocking them. He is showing how deep the mystery goes. Think of trying to see your own eyes without a mirror. The thing doing the looking is the hardest thing to see. So no one needs to feel foolish for finding it hard.

A Question to Sit With

Isn't it strange that the thing doing all your thinking is so hard to find?
