You have forsaken the Lord - now where will you go? Unto whom will you turn? ||1||Pause||

In plain words

O restless heart, there's no need to feel small or ashamed —

for why would you turn away from the One, looking to lesser doors?

You don't need to wander to lesser doors — the One is already yours.
The deeper layer

This is a gentle question to a heart that has wandered off: why go to smaller doors when the One is right here?

The shabad is set to two raags at once, Gauree and also Sorath. A raag is a musical mood with its own set of songs. It opens with its Rahao, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Har taj kat kaahoo kay — leaving the One, where would you go? Whose door would you knock on?

Kabir does not scold. He asks, the way a grandparent might ask a child who wandered off at the fair. The tone is an invitation home, not blame.

A Question to Sit With

When you feel low, where do you go for comfort — and is it the deepest source?
