Belong to the Highest and Beg at No Lesser Door

ਜਾ ਕੋ ਠਾਕੁਰੁ ਊਚਾ ਹੋਈ ॥
jaa ko thaakur oochaa ho-ee.
One whose Lord and Master is the highest and most exalted
ਸੋ ਜਨੁ ਪਰ ਘਰ ਜਾਤ ਨ ਸੋਹੀ ॥੧॥
so jan par ghar jaat na sohee. ||1||
- it is not proper for him to go to the house of another. ||1||

In plain words

When the One you belong to is the very highest,

it just doesn't suit you to go begging at anyone else's door.

When you belong to the highest, you needn't beg at lesser doors.
The deeper layer

When you belong to the highest, begging at smaller doors does not fit who you are.

Jaa ko thaakur oochaa ho-ee — the one whose Master is the highest. Thaakur means master, the one you belong to. So jan par ghar jaat na sohee — it does not suit that person to go to someone else's house.

Kabir is talking about dignity. Your true home is the highest reality itself. So shrinking yourself to beg somewhere else does not fit you. Think of someone with a full fridge at home, knocking on a stranger's door for a snack. There is no need. This is not pride. It is remembering your worth. You belong to the highest, so you can carry yourself that way.

A Question to Sit With

How might you carry yourself differently if you remembered your true worth?
