Verse 3 of 4

Everything We Revere Points Back to the Source

ਬ੍ਰਹਮਾ ਬਡਾ ਕਿ ਜਾਸੁ ਉਪਾਇਆ ॥
barahmaa badaa ke jaas upaa-i-aa.
Is Brahma greater, or the One who created Him?
ਬੇਦੁ ਬਡਾ ਕਿ ਜਹਾਂ ਤੇ ਆਇਆ ॥੨॥
bayd badaa ke jahaaN tay aa-i-aa. ||2||
Are the Vedas greater, or the One from which they came? ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Which is greater — Brahma, or the One who created Brahma?

Which is greater — the sacred scriptures, or the Source they came from?

Everything we revere still points back to the Source it came from.
The deeper layer

Even the greatest things we honour come from a Source. So they all point back to the One.

Barahmaa badaa ke jaas upaa-i-aa — is Brahma greater, or the One who made him? In Hindu tradition, Brahma is the god who creates the world. Bayd badaa ke jahaa tay aa-i-aa — are the Vedas greater, or the One they came from? The Vedas are the oldest Hindu holy books.

Kabir asks with respect. Even a great creator figure, even holy books, flow from a Source. Whatever we honour still points beyond itself. Think of a great river. However grand it is, it always leads back to its spring. Kabir honours these things by tracing them home to where they began.

A Question to Sit With

When you love a story or a song, aren't you also loving whoever made it?
