Some Sweetness Is Full Before You Find the Words

ਤਜਿ ਬਾਵੇ ਦਾਹਨੇ ਬਿਕਾਰਾ ਹਰਿ ਪਦੁ ਦ੍ਰਿੜੁ ਕਰਿ ਰਹੀਐ ॥
taj baavay daahnay bikaaraa har pad darirh kar rahee-ai.
Give up the evil actions of your left and right hands, and grasp hold of the Feet of the Lord.

Says Kabir, the mute has tasted the molasses, but what can he say about it if he is asked? ||4||7||51||

In plain words

Gently set aside what pulls you off course on either side. Hold steady to the One.

Kabir says: it is like tasting something wonderfully sweet and having no words for it. If someone asks, what can you say?

Some sweetness is real and full long before you can find the words for it.
The deeper layer

This one says that some sweetness is full and real before you can put it into words.

Taj baavay daahnay bikaaraa — let go of the wrong doings on the left and on the right. That means whatever pulls you off course, from either side. Har pad darirh kar rahee-ai — and hold steady to the feet of the One.

Then Kabir's famous closing picture. Kaho kabeer gooNgai gurh khaa-i-aa — someone who cannot speak has tasted gurh, sweet jaggery made from sugarcane. Poochhay tay ki-aa kahee-ai — if you ask them about it, what can they say? They can only smile.

Knowing the One directly is bigger than words. Think of trying to explain to a friend how your favorite song makes you feel. Hold steady to the One, and the sweetness you find will be real long before it can be said.

A Question to Sit With

What is a joy you have felt so fully that words could not quite capture it?
