Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa
Just as devoted hearts long ago held fast to the One with all their love, so can you, my soul.
Turn toward the One the way they did — with trust, with a whole heart.
This one says: love the One the way the great devotees did, and you can hold on too.
Raam japa-o jee-a aisay aisay — O my soul, remember the One just like this. Dharoo par-hilaad japi-o har jaisay — the way Dhroo and Prahlaad remembered.
Dhroo and Prahlaad are two much-loved figures from Hindu tradition. Both are remembered as children whose steady love for the One carried them through great trials. Kabir holds them up warmly as examples for everyone. The great devotees of every tradition point toward the same One.
His words to "my soul" are gentle encouragement. Think of a younger sibling watching an older one learn to ride a bike. What they did, you can do too. Just love, and hold on.
Who is someone whose steady, loving heart you'd like to be a little more like?
