Millions of Lives Lost to the Unrealized Word

ਲਖ ਚਉਰਾਸੀਹ ਭਰਮਦੇ ਮਨਹਠਿ ਆਵੈ ਜਾਇ ॥

Through 8.4 million incarnations, people wander lost; in stubborn-mindedness, they come and go.

They do not realize the Word of the Guru's Shabad; they are reincarnated over and over again. ||2||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

Through millions and millions of lives, people wander, lost. Stubborn and self-willed, they come and go. Never grasping the Word, they keep being born again and again.

Millions of lives of wandering -- all because the Word goes unrealized.
The deeper layer

The classic 8.4 million life-forms -- the vast wheel of transmigration. The cause is ego and stubbornness and not realizing the Shabad. The scale is traditionally read as underscoring how precious this human chance is.

A Question to Sit With

If this human life is one rare chance, what do you most want to do with it?
