We Turn With Love; the Meeting Itself Is Grace

ਤੋਹਿ ਚਰਨ ਮਨੁ ਲਾਗੋ ਸਾਰਿੰਗਧਰ ॥
tohi charan man laago saaringDhar.
My mind is attached to Your Feet, O Archer of the Universe;
ਸੋ ਮਿਲੈ ਜੋ ਬਡਭਾਗੋ ॥੧॥ ਰਹਾਉ ॥
so milai jo badbhaago. ||1|| rahaa-o.
he alone meets You, who is blessed by great good fortune. ||1||Pause||

Translation by Dr. Sant Singh Khalsa

In plain words

My mind is held close to You, O One who holds the whole universe.

And the one who truly meets You is blessed with great good fortune indeed.

We turn toward the One with love — and the meeting itself is grace.
The deeper layer

We turn toward the One with love, and the meeting itself is a gift.

This is the Rahao, the "pause" line, the center of the shabad. Tohi charan man laago saaringDhar — my mind is held at Your feet, O SaaringDhar. The name means the Archer of the universe, the One who holds it all. It is one of Kabir's many names for the One.

The line has two halves. Our part is love: my mind is held close to You. The meeting itself is badbhaago, great good fortune. It is grace. We reach toward the One with longing, and the meeting is a gift we receive, not a prize we win.

It is like waving to a friend across a crowded street. You do the waving, but the friend has to turn and see you. Love reaches out; grace answers.

A Question to Sit With

What things in your life feel less like something you earned and more like a gift?
