A Heart Soaked in Love Grows Fragrant

ਏਕ ਸੁਮਤਿ ਰਤਿ ਜਾਨਿ ਮਾਨਿ ਪ੍ਰਭ ਦੂਸਰ ਮਨਹਿ ਨ ਆਨਾਨਾ ॥
ayk sumat rat jaan maan parabh doosar maneh na aanaanaa.
Imbued with a balanced single-mindedness, I know and obey God; nothing else enters my mind.
ਚੰਦਨ ਬਾਸੁ ਭਏ ਮਨ ਬਾਸਨ ਤਿਆਗਿ ਘਟਿਓ ਅਭਿਮਾਨਾਨਾ ॥੨॥
chandan baas bha-ay man baasan ti-aag ghati-o abhimaanaanaa. ||2||
My mind has become fragrant with the scent of sandalwood; I have renounced egotistical selfishness and conceit. ||2||

In plain words

Colored through and through by one steady love, I know and lean on the One, and nothing else crowds my mind.

My mind has grown fragrant, like sandalwood, and the heaviness of pride and self-importance has simply fallen away.

A heart soaked in love grows fragrant, and pride quietly falls away.
The deeper layer

A heart soaked in love grows fragrant, and pride quietly falls away.

Ayk sumat rat — colored by one steady love. The mind is so soaked in love for the One that nothing else crowds in.

Then the lovely picture: chandan baas bha-ay man baasan — the mind becomes fragrant like sandalwood. In India, sandalwood is known for sharing its scent with everything near it. So a heart rooted in the One becomes sweet to be around.

When that love fills you, abhimaan falls away. Abhimaan is pride and self-importance. It is one form of haumai, the me-first feeling. You do not have to force it out.

It leaves the way tightness leaves your shoulders when you finally relax. Letting go of pride is a relief, not a punishment.

A Question to Sit With

Have you noticed how being around a genuinely kind person makes you feel lighter?
